Typically, I get up between 7 or 8 in the morning. No, I'm not a morning person, but the sun shines so brightly into my bedroom that it's impossible to ignore. That and the ZILLION crows out in the courtyard.
So far, so good.
I get to a point in the project where I need some "dummy data." I need to enter some fake names for testing. I need five names. The first five that come to mind are: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, George Harrison and Pete Best.
I enter them. The program's working. We're rolling.
I need two more names to test another piece of the program. Ok... I certainly can't switch from the Beatles to the Yardbirds, right? I need more Beatles. Who else was there? Stu Sutcliffe, right. Who else... I can't remember... Tommy Something? Damn it. I'm stumped.
But I *do* know where to find the answer: Wikipedia.
If you don't know, Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia that covers EVERYTHING. From science to law to medicine to pop-culture. It's one of the best sites on the Intarweb. I visit it at least once a day.
But the problem is: Wikipedia is SO GODDAMN WELL DONE and SO FREAKING INTERESTING that it's nearly *impossible* get off the damn site. Just like Tim Berners-Lee intended: everything is a hyperlink to something else equally as interesting.
Now here's where my morning really got fouled up: I use Firefox. Not because I hate Microsoft (I do), not because I support open standards (I do). Nope. There's nothing political about my decision to use Firefox. I use it for one main reason: TABBED BROWSING.
Oh, mama... tabbed browsing is the only way to fly. Rather than open a bunch of windows, with Firefox, you can CTRL+Click on a link and a new tab appears behind your current window. It's so elegant, and clean and intuitive. So, there you are, researching former Beatles drummers, and you just *have* to know about the Paul-Is-Dead Conspiracy. But I don't want to lose my place on my current page, so... CTRL+Click to TAB IT!
Ok, you finish your Beatles page and close the tab. Oh! Paul Is Dead! I forgot, you read the page...
But there's more interesting stuff to read after this!
Backward Messages! (TAB IT)
Conspiracy Theories! (TAB IT)
Close your Paul Is Dead window... read your tabs... read about Karl Popper, The US DOD which leads to the topic of The Illuminati and other Secret Societies. Oh! The Majestic 12 and their connection to the Great UFO Conspiracy!
Ay carumba! It's almost 10 now! I've wasted almost TWO HOURS on Wikipedia. And, as such, haven't progressed in my intranet project at all.
So, I close my Firefox tabs and back out to the Wiki main page to sign off.
I just HAVE to read about that!
Now, it's after 10. I'm a hair smarter than I was two hours ago, but no further along in my project.
I close my Wiki tabs, sigh, and return to my project--FINALLY.
Oh, wait! Before I get back to work, maybe I should BLOG about this!
